Researching and Summarising

We are learning about summarising in reading.  We have to find keywords (the most important words) in a text to do this.  Then we practise putting these keywords into sentences of our own.  We used the website dogonews to help us practise this strategy.
This is a great site for kids to research current events.
Our task.
Sammy, Jacob and Lily research together to find keywords.
Flynn, Libby and Kahu work together.
Brooke, Isabelle and Keelan research too.
Joshua, Diego and Dylan.
Now it's time to present our research.  We have to use the keywords to summarise what we have discovered.  This group  researched how children in rural India are using portable school cases that can be turned into a table for them to use at school.  They are made out of cardboard.  The children had to work on the floor at school and were bent over to work before they had the cardboard desks.
We are lucky to have chairs to sit on and desks to work at in New Zealand.

Samuel, Vaisiliva and Lochy share information about the tallest lego tower built in the world.  This story really appealed with the boys!
Paige and Ella talk about Donut Day in America - If I had known it was donut day on June 6, I would have brought some in!  We learnt about the Salvation Army giving soldiers donuts and coffee during the war.

A great list of keywords.
Key ideas about the donut story.
