Room 4's Inquiry Topic about the Human Body

We have been learning about the cardiovascular system this week, with a focus on the heart.  Each student has been researching a question about the heart.  Here are some photos of us dissecting a lamb's heart.  The lamb's heart has chambers and blood vessels that look like tubes.  It looks like a human heart and is probably the same size as the children's hearts in room 4.  It has a left and right ventricle chamber, and a left and right atrium chamber like a human heart.

Sammy confidently holds a lamb's heart in her hands.  It feels heavier than we expected.

Ruby enjoys learning about science.  Her mum bought an extra 2 hearts for the class to dissect.

Lilly and Dylan talk about what the heart looks like inside.  It looks very meaty because it is a muscle.

Marina uses a skewer to prod the heart.  We could feel that one side was tough and the other side was spongy.

Brooke and Megan are not sure about this activity at all.  Despite this, they bravely examine the lamb's heart.

We worked in our groups to examine the hearts.

Anna and Leanne enjoyed this activity.  They talk about what they have found.  Joshua notices that this heart has a white fatty covering all over it.

Room 4 Heart Dissection

Lochy, Will, Jacob and Sam really want to know what is inside.
We are learning about the human body.  Today we dissected a lamb's heart.  We were able to see inside it and feel it.  Overall we coped very well with this experience and were fascinated to see what a real heart looks like.

Budding scientists …
Joshua and Ben carefully study the inside of a heart.  We were surprised to see that it looked like  muscle inside.  It had some large blood vessels which looked like tubes.  Part of the heart is called an aorta.  There were some very strong fibres inside too.  These were very difficult to break.

Skeleton Art

Today the children in room 4 created a skeleton using various types of pasta.  We had to be patient and use our fine motor skills to stick the pasta in the right place.
